A growing body of scientific research confirms that clinical hypnotherapy does in fact work. Medical and academic authorities at top US research institutes say an increasing number of evidence-based findings underscore the effectiveness of clinical hypnotherapy. “Hypnosis is the oldest Western form of psychotherapy,” says Stanford Medical School MD and Professor of Medicine, Dr. David Siegel, “In fact, it’s a very powerful means of changing the way we use our minds to control perception and our bodies.”

Hypnotherapy works by teaching you how to relax deeply, let go of the critical self-talk of the conscious mind, and trust in your subconscious mind’s ability to replace old, limiting beliefs and habits with positive new beliefs and behaviors.

You come to our sessions with the expectation of change. There’s a goal you want to achieve, a behavioral problem you want to resolve. In hypnosis, we explore subconscious ideas and thinking patterns that might be holding you back. Together we work with hypnotherapeutic techniques and carefully targeted suggestions and images that resonate with your subconscious mind, help you overcome resistance, and trigger an emotionalized desire to act on the changes you want to make.

Through repetition and practice—both in session and on your own–new beliefs take hold. You begin to see results. Your growing confidence and expectation create an energy and excitement that drives a virtuous behavioral feedback loop. Internalizing your new beliefs, you become the change!

And once you understand that self-hypnosis is a natural ability you can tap into at any time, you’re incentivized to make it a regular part of your daily life even after our sessions are complete. With practice, your confidence in achieving other personal goals increases over time.

What clinical hypnotherapy can do for you

Whatever issues you may be faced with in life, I consider it a privilege to help you work through them. As client and co-therapist, you bring the focus to our work by choosing the goals you most wish to succeed at—both the desire and the transformation come from within you.

My role is to first understand your challenges and concerns, as well as your expectations for change. You entrust me to give you the resources you need to guide you down a new path with a new perspective. We then work together utilizing issue-specific hypnotherapeutic methods and techniques to bring about the positive changes you desire. It’s a client-centric method that is very effective in addressing all of the below issues.

Stress reduction and health/lifestyle challenges

  • Learn quick and effectives stress reduction and relaxation techniques.
  • Develop workplace confidence and resiliency.
  • Improve concentration and attention thresholds.
  • Overcome insomnia and restore healthy sleep patterns.
  • Create and commit to enjoyable fitness habits and routines.
  • Attain your ideal weight by re-learning healthy eating habits and re-setting your natural appestat.

Given the close relationship among the above health goals, clients often work across multiple issues and sessions to reinforce long-lasting behavioral change. Too much stress, for example–often job-related–leads to sleep problems that can provoke poor eating habits and weight gain not conducive to a regular exercise routine. Together, we try to identify your habitual reactions to perceived stressors and replace them with new attitudes and coping strategies. As you learn to adjust better to life’s challenges, you become more positive, purposeful, and productive.

Performance-based goal achievement

  • Boost motivation and self-esteem.
  • Achieve peak performance and reach goals.
  • Learn to “stay in the zone” on the job, in your sport, or in any high-pressure situation.
  • Master public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Beat test anxiety and get ahead in school.

To achieve the above goals, performance anxiety, a type of inner, often self-imposed stress, is dealt with directly. Client breakthroughs in one area have been shown to generalize across others, e.g., improved focus and concentration at work carries over to improved sport performance.

Adjunctive medical support

  • Manage chronic pain, including back, neck and other areas of discomfort.
  • Accelerate healing.
  • Optimize pre- and post-surgery health and recovery.
  • Take the pain out of dental work.
  • Effectively manage other chronic health issues.
  • Get rid of unwanted habits.
  • Overcome old phobias and trauma.
  • Learn forgiveness.
  • Work through grief and loss.
  • Explore and resolve early childhood development issues.

Numerous other issues can be successfully addressed with hypnotherapy. In most cases, 6 sessions are effective for resolving many of the above issues. More complex issues may require 10 sessions. Each session runs for approximately 90 minutes and can be scheduled either once or twice per week. As a private client, you will be given a self-hypnosis CD at the end of the first session. Other recordings may also be provided on an ongoing basis depending on the nature of the work we do together.

Testimonials

I began hypnotherapy sessions with Francis late last year to better deal with the treadmill lifestyle I have been living. I work long hours under steady pressure to perform on projects and end up not having much of a life outside my work. I was better able to understand and deal with my work pressure in my weekly hypnotherapy sessions, and the upside is I’ve learned how to relax more and let go of my “always on” work focus. I’m going to a fitness center mornings, eating healthier and getting more rest. So my hypnotherapy work and daily self-hypnosis practice seem to be really paying off. I have Francis’s great sessions and guidance to thank for that.

-Clark B. Seattle IT professional

Anyone with back pain take note, you don’t need to live with your pain! After just four hypnotherapy sessions with Francis at Clinical Hypnotherapy Works my lower back issue seems to be resolved. In addition to being an excellent hypnotherapist, Francis is also a long-time practitioner of the Alexander Technique, and the AT exercises he taught me plus the insights on head, neck, and back alignment have been extremely helpful.

-Wyatt L, architect, Albuquerque, N.M.

I had always been quite fit and slender before arriving in America to work. Life in the US is full of adjustment. I decided early I would adapt as best I can and started eating more Western food since authentic Chinese food is hard to find in Seattle. After only a year living in States I gained over 6 kilo! I didn’t feel healthy and my clothes no longer fit. I felt less active at work too. In my hypnosis sessions I was able to find my old self again and get in touch with my original, healthier eating habits. Chinese-size portions cut back on sweet desserts, more fruits and vegetables. I decided to walk more too. I have already lost 2 kilo and know that I can regain my figure again. Thank you Francis for showing me the way!

About Me

My Story: How Hypnotherapy and Self-hypnosis Kept My Career on Track

Work stress and health concerns were actually important factors in my decision to become a clinical hypnotherapist. For over twenty years, I lived and worked throughout Asia as a project development senior executive for several Fortune 500 companies. During that time, I was based in Taipei, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, and back to Hong Kong again. The pressures of regular relocation and adjusting to new multicultural workplaces across the vast and economically dynamic Asia Pacific region presented some unique challenges. I spent many hours on flights and in hotels. Managing travel and relocation stress while staying focused on my professional–and my personal goals–was always one of my biggest challenges. Strategically-timed hypnotherapy sessions, and a regular self-hypnosis practice helped me maintain my mental equilibrium and my achievement focus.

Stress wasn’t my only challenge, however. Throughout my career in Asia, I suffered from a chronic liver condition as well as an autoimmune disorder, and I relied on hypnotherapy and self-hypnosis to stabilize both conditions even as I took on other challenges. I began competing in 5k and 10k running competitions again and achieved personal best times faster than any I’d run in university–with the added bonus that my health actually improved. I studied part-time and got a second graduate degree even as I received successive promotions at work. In short, hypnotherapy and self-hypnosis enabled me to tap into energy reserves I didn’t know I had. I’m confident they can do the same for you.

Academic Background and Training

As a graduate of the internationally recognized Hypnotherapy Academy of America, I completed 500 hours of clinical hypnotherapy training for certification as a Medical Support Clinical Hypnotherapist. I am also a Fellow of the International Board of Hypnotherapy (IBH) which maintains the highest certification standards in the field of hypnotherapy and requires on-going learning for re-certification.

In addition to my private hypnotherapy practice as a Certified Medical Support and Clinical Hypnotherapist (CMS-CCHT) I am also working on a doctoral degree in clinical psychology. A main focus of my doctoral research is therapeutic models that combine both cognitive behavioral and hypnotherapeutic modalities in treating stress-related disorders.

I was awarded both my MBA and BSc degrees from Cornell University, and my MSc in Electronic Commerce from the internationally acclaimed Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). I also speak, read, and write Mandarin Chinese and Japanese.

Does Hypnotherapy Work?

A growing body of scientific research confirms that clinical hypnotherapy does in fact work. Medical and academic authorities at top US research institutes say an increasing number of evidence-based findings underscore the effectiveness of clinical hypnotherapy. “Hypnosis is the oldest Western form of psychotherapy,” says Stanford Medical School MD and Professor of Medicine, Dr. David Siegel, “In fact, it’s a very powerful means of changing the way we use our minds to control perception and our bodies.”

“Hypnosis helps patients to reduce their distress and have positive expectations about the outcomes of surgery. I don’t think there is any magic or mind control,” observes Dr. Guy H. Montgomery, psychologist and leading researcher on hypnosis and pain management at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

The American Psychology Association (APA) provides their own endorsement of hypnotherapy stating: “Most clinicians now agree it (hypnotherapy) can be a powerful, effective therapeutic technique for a wide range of conditions, including pain, anxiety and mood disorders. Hypnosis can also help people change their habits, such as quitting smoking.”

Who can perform clinical hypnosis?

A Certified Medical Support Clinical Hypnotherapist (CMS-CCHt) must complete a rigorous training program of 400 hours of study and supervised, hands-on training followed by a certification exam. A Certified Hypnotherapist (CHt) on the other hand must complete a 300-hour program as well as a certification exam. If there is ever any question regarding the credentials of a hypnotherapist you plan to work with, it is fair be sure to inquire about his/her relevant training program, hours of study, and certification.

Is Hypnotherapy Dangerous?

There is nothing dangerous about hypnotherapy. Fears that hypnotherapy is a form of mind control are based more on Hollywood fiction than fact. At no point during hypnosis will you lose control of your mind. If you hear a suggestion that you do not agree with, or do not understand, your subconscious mind will automatically reject it. If at any time there is an emergency, a hypnotized subject person can naturally come out of hypnosis and react appropriately.

Hypnosis itself is a natural state and its efficacy effectiveness has been researched and substantiated by well-known psychologists, including Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and Milton Erickson.

In fact, hypnotic trance is something that most people drift in and out of several times a day. Some of the most common occurrences of situational hypnosis are while driving, watching TV, or being engrossed in a good book. While Hypnosis hypnotherapy is not a miracle cure, it is a proven and relatively fast method for achieving both behavioral and attitudinal change.
